ESTIMATES — BRANCHES OF THE MINT.

December 30, 1836.
Printed by order of the House of Representatives.

Washington, December 28, 1836.

Sir: I send you, herewith, my estimates for the expenses of the branch mints for 1837, prepared with great care, on consultation with my fellow-officers. It is proper to present you with the following explanations:

1. New Orleans branch. — The salaries for the whole year are given, though they cannot all be drawn. The wages of laborers are assessed at $90 per month per twenty workmen, from June 1st to December 31st. The other contingent expenses are based upon the supposition that two millions will be coined in the seven months of labor.

The appropriation for the building and machinery of the New Orleans branch was $200,000
The contract price for machinery is $43,630
The contract price for putting up the building, exclusive of one wing, out-buildings, and the enclosing of the lot, is 182,000
I have no accurate means of estimating the costof putting up the remaining wing, &c., but presume it may be put down at one-third of what is now under contract, viz: 60,677
The railing round the lot, which is large, will not cost less than 10,000

296,297

Leaving still wanted $96,297

On this ground I have inserted the sum of $96,500, under the head “for completing the mint edifices and enclosing the lot.”

2. The gold mints. — The contracts for the Charlotte branch were lower than those for the Dahlonega branch, and hence the difference in the amounts of the estimates now presented. I have estimated for five laborers (the legal limit) at each branch, for six months’ work, and at $50 per month each. The supposed coinage at each mint is half a million, on which the estimate of wastage, &c. is based.

Very respectfully, your faithful servant,

R. M. PATTERSON,
Director of the Mint.

Hon. C. C. CAMBRELENG,
Ch’n Com. Ways and Means, H. R.
