Pidyon Haben Tokens and Coins The firstborn son should be redeemed on at least the 31st day of life, with silver coins that are given to the rabbi. The coins must be silver, and they must be equal in weight to the Biblical five shekalim — about 117 grams of pure silver. Since silver shekel coins are not often available, other silver coins or medals have been used, such as silver half dollars in the United States. |

29 minutes of Lincoln This talk is about Lincoln tokens, medal, etc. — Paul’s favorites, with pictures! Some history, some insights. Time for questions and answers. 14:00 - Ernie Nagy Presidential Campaign Medals as Artifacts of Lincoln’s Abolition Transformation Over 150 Abraham Lincoln campaign medals have been cataloged from the elections of 1860 and 1864. Of these, a handful bore legends or mottos which reference the slavery crisis. This talk will discuss the expressions engraved during Lincoln’s first campaign; and the events which led to the transformation of Lincoln’s slavery position, as evidenced by significantly different medals struck for his re-election. 14:30 - Eric Schena Civil War Tokens of Virginia Virginia saw by far the most number of military engagements during the American Civil War, with almost one-third of all the principal battles fought within the state’s borders. Yet, of the many thousands of tokens and store cards produced during the “Late Unpleasantness” almost none are known from Virginia merchants. Eric Schena explores the history and details behind five Virginia tokens, and offers evidence for two store cards with the best claims as true Civil War period tokens from the capital of the Confederate States. |

World War I: The Medallic Battle between France and Germany, A Personal View. This talk will mix a bit of art history with the examination of the medallic production of both countries during the more than four years of the “war to end all wars.” The medalic production of France and Germany during this time is remarkably different, and I will be noting the variation between the countries in the use of medals to convey social issues and feelings, the wide shift in use of medallic metals and artistic forms, along with the way in which medallic art diffused into the two societies. I’m interested in the way medallic art moved from high culture to intense, if anonymous expression. Tony Lopez and Skyler Leichty Adventures in Researching Medals This enlightening update of their ongoing research into American Colonial era medals will give us an insider’s view of their research techniques and how they were able to uncover important and interesting discoveries about historical medals. |

Those who attend this program will see electronic images of these unique currencies, learn how it was manufactured, how it was most likely spent by average Japanese citizens, and how the currencies changed during the 18th-19th centuries.
