2025 CCC Dues are Due

It is that time of year again. Please pay your 2025 dues.

Check the outside of your printed Chatter. A slip of paper stapled outside the cover indicates that, according to our records, you have not paid your dues for 2025. Please mail the dues to the address on that slip, or use one of the other methods detailed on that slip. For members who are notified by email when a new Chatter issue is available online, the email stated if you have not paid your dues for 2025.

Members who do not pay by March 31, 2025 will be dropped.

On the mailing labels used to mail the printed Chatter, the top right corner has the last digit of the last year for which a member has dues paid (a “4” indicates this member is paid through 2024 and needs to pay for 2025) – for a Life Member, “LM” is in the top right corner. Because we print the labels for a few months at a time, your mailing label might not change immediately.

Minutes of the 1270th Meeting

The 1270th meeting of the Chicago Coin Club was called to order by President John Riley at 6:45PM CST, Wednesday, November 13, 2024. This was an in-person and online meeting, held at the Chicago Bar Association. Attendance at the meeting in person was 22 members and two guests, and online attendance of 11 members and two guests applying for membership, for a total of 37.

Club Meeting Minutes and Treasurer’s Report

The October meeting minutes were approved as published in the Chatter, both in print and on the CCC website.

Elliott Krieter submitted reports for the September and October periods. September revenue of $980.00 (Dues, Banquet, Club item sales) and expenses of $9,275.35(ANA convention, Club Insurance, Postage, meeting room rent), for a September period net of -$8,295.35. Much of this expense being offset by the convention income in the May 2024 period. October revenue of $580 (banquet, dues) and expenses $0.00, for an October period net of $580.00. Both reports were approved by the membership.

New Members

Secretary Scott McGowan completed the second membership application readings for Julie A. Block of N. Uxbridge, Massachusetts and Jack Kohn of Chicago, Illinois; both were approved by the membership. First readings of new membership applications were completed for Frank Gross of Streamwood, Illinois, a collector of early American coins, commemoratives, and civil war tokens; and Zachary Filis of Fairfield, Virginia, a collector of US and world coins and medals. Scott noted we still have three membership applications waiting on applicant meeting attendance so they can be read.

Old Business

  1. Reminder: the December meeting is the annual banquet, at Capri Italian Restaurant in Palos Heights, Illinois. Cost is $45, or $50 after December 5, 2024. Make your reservations by sending payment to the Club PO Box, or Zelle to treasurer.chicagocoinclub@gmail.com. A cash bar cocktail hour, followed by dinner, then a special 2024 CCC year-in-review presentation.
  2. Mark Wieclaw reported the Special Projects Committee plans a meeting in December.

New Business

  1. President John Riley called for a moment of silence in remembering former CCC member Kermit Wasmer. Kermit was a member from 1995-2005, the 1999 general chairman for the ANA convention, and past president of ILNA.
  2. John Riley announced to the club that we are looking for a member to manage the media technology for club meetings. The job description includes setup, running the various media equipment owned by the club to facilitate the online portion of meetings and the display of presentations, show and tell, and other needs for visual and audio aspects. Interested members should contact the club president, vice president, or secretary.
  3. John reported there will be a November CCC Board Meeting November 20, 2024. Any member with issues to be brought to the board, please contact a club officer.
  4. John reported on the purchase of a new Cord Protection Rug to cover media cords during meetings, to prevent any tripping hazards.
  5. Past President Lyle Daly presented a gavel to be used at club meetings and also suggested that we have past presidents initial it in some way.
  6. Lyle also read a letter received in the Club PO Box from members Sharon and Kevin Blocker that included a $500 donation to the club to cover the holiday banquet cost for the President, Program presenter, and Young Numismatists, with remainder being used as needed.

Featured Program

The Annual CCC Auction – auctioneer and club member Jeff Rosinia peppered the members with numerous nifty numismatic narrative nods for our noggins, in between his proficient presentation pushing potential purchasers throughout the club auction. In all, 51 lots of items, both for club benefit and member consignments, were successfully auctioned off.

Show and Tell

There was no Show and Tell in November.

President John Riley adjourned the meeting at 8:25pm CST.

Respectfully Submitted,
Scott A. McGowan, Secretary

Seeking Club Volunteers

The club seeks a few volunteers to operate the equipment supporting an online meeting. Deven Kane has performed the tasks wonderfully ever since our first online efforts, but it is time for others to help. By using a team, we should have multiple hands available, even when one member cannot attend a meeting. Here is what the job entails:

Club Audio Visual Team

With the guidance and assistance of the CCC 2nd Vice President, handle the month to month set up and operation of the audio (microphone/speaker) and visual (iPad, Laptop, Viewer) equipment during club meetings and events.

The team would utilize the club owned equipment, maintain it, raise to the board any needs for improvements or problems with the equipment.

The team would set up the connections of the iPad and Laptop to the projection viewer, set up the iPad on the tripod, connect the wires to the Viewer, then operate the equipment during club meetings.

The team would receive the digital presentations from featured speakers and Show and Tell and display them at the needed time during the meeting.

After the meeting the team would, with the help of club members, pack up the AV equipment for storage until the next meeting.

If interested in joining or discussing this opportunity, please contact a club officer.

Minutes of the Chicago Coin Club Board

November 20, 2024

CCC President John Riley called the meeting to order at 6:00pm CST.

In attendance were John Riley, Melissa Gumm, Deven Kane, Paul Hybert, Scott McGowan, Mark Wieclaw, Rich Lipman, Bill Burd, Elliott Krieter, Carl Wolf, Steve Zitowsky, and Ray Dagenais.

Old Business

  1. President John Riley declared the club auction a great deal and success, and thanked the committee, Rich Lipman and Deven Kane, for their planning and organization. John also thanked and remarked that our auctioneer, Jeff Rosinia, was superb.
  2. The December banquet reservations stand at 28, and we hope to end with a total of 40-50.
  3. Special Projects committee: Mark Wieclaw indicated a planned meeting for December 4th.
  4. Carl Wolf raised the need for Cabeen medals, and reported that we have six paid brass medals at the foundry but should order four more, at $20 each; then the cost to plate all ten in Silver or Gold is $45 each. The total expenditure would be $80 plus $450, for a total of $530.00. The board agreed.
  5. Mark Wieclaw indicated we need to inventory Medal of Merit medals on hand with archivist Bill Burd. Bill will inventory and advise Mark so we can determine if an order needs to be placed for more.
  6. 2025 club officer discussion: no further interest by individuals have come forward, so the slate nominated will be put forth at the December meeting for club vote. Ray Dagenais agreed to the office of 2nd VP, thus completing the nominated slate as Melissa Gumm (P), Deven Kane (1st VP), Ray Dagenais (2nd VP), plus the directors mentioned in the October club meeting.
  7. 2025 featured speakers are set for January through June as: January 8, Dale Lukanich; February 12, Mark Wieclaw; March 12, Steve and Ray Feller; April 9, Tyler Rossi; May 14, Richard Hamilton (tentative); and June 11, Lianna Spurrier.
  8. The board discussed the previously approved new microphone/speaker yet to be purchased. Mark Wieclaw showed an image of the Microsoft Meeting Owl Pro as a possible option. No decision was made pending further research.
  9. Mention was made to review a change to the board’s cap on spending without club approval. Currently set at $500.00 years ago, there was discussion to possibly change the cap to $1000.

New Business

  1. Chatter Editor Paul Hybert indicated that dues renewal notices will be included with the December Chatter mailing, and asked for an updated membership list. Elliott Krieter indicated the updated list was posted to the Google drive on November 19th.
  2. Paul reviewed the 2025 Chatter schedule indicating that some issues will be mailed within a few days (earlier or later) of the typical mailing day due to scheduling. Paul indicated he will not be in attendance at the May and July regular monthly meetings.
  3. The board spent considerable time discussing the position of an Audio/Visual resource for the club. The key aspects were to ensure resources for consistent operation of the month-to-month meeting Audio and Visual needs. Secretary Scott McGowan crafted a position description and presented it to the board. Further discussion led to this becoming a team under guidance of the 2nd VP, with more than one individual to help share the needs. Several names were mentioned, with president John Riley to reach out to each of them for interest. The board to further discuss adding this to the by-laws at later meetings.
  4. Paul Hybert reported that the August 2025 board meeting will conflict with the ANA 2025 convention in Oklahoma City, so the board may want to review alternative dates as some board members will be at the convention.
  5. Paul Hybert reported that the Central States Numismatic Society (CSNS) will bring back the exhibit area for their 2025 convention. There will be one class, for the convention theme “State of Nebraska,” keeping in line with CSNS highlighting one member state per year. Exhibitors are limited to one exhibit per member, using a maximum of five cases.
  6. CCC bank account — After the new year, the treasurer will coordinate the new President signature on the club bank account.
  7. Past President Rich Lipman indicated that with the new officer election in December he will rotate off the CCC board, and thanked all the members for their support throughout his tenure.

President John Riley Adjourned the meeting at 7:08pm CST.

2025 Future Board Meetings: February 19, May 21, August 20, and November 19.

Respectfully Submitted,
Scott A. McGowan, Secretary
