Chatter

Volume 69 No. 12 December, 2023

2024 CCC Dues are Due

It is that time of year again. Please pay your 2024 dues.

Check the outside of your printed Chatter. A slip of paper stapled outside the cover indicates that, according to our records, you have not paid your dues for 2024. Please mail the dues to the address on that slip, or use one of the other methods detailed on that slip. For members who are notified by email when a new Chatter issue is available online, the email stated if you have not paid your dues for 2024.

Members who do not pay by March 31, 2024 will be dropped.

The format of the mailing labels used to mail the printed Chatter was changed a few months ago. Now, the last digit of the last year for which a member has dues paid is shown in the top right corner (a “3” indicates this member is paid through 2023 and needs to pay for 2024) – for a Life Member, “LM” is in the top right corner. We will try to update the mailing labels within a month or two of receipt of dues.

Club Meeting Minutes and Treasurer’s Report

  2. Club president John Riley thanked all those involved in the annual club auction that was about to start. Noted were Bill Burd for all the organization and management of the auction lots, Jeff Rosinia for his auctioneer skills and numismatic jokes, and Melissa Gumm for keeping the steady stream of auction items flowing from the preview gallery to the auction block.

New Business

  1. John Riley and Melissa Gumm announced the need for speakers and programs for the 2024 year. Topics can be any numismatic subject on coins, currency, literature, tokens, medals, exhibiting, storage, display, conventions, themes, and other numismatically creative ideas. Contact Melissa Gumm mjg513@yahoo.com with interest to do a presentation. Presentations can be done in person or as a remote attendee online. Presenters receive an ANA educational certificate and a beautiful shiny CCC speaker’s medal.
  2. John reported that CCC’s Deven Kane participated as a speaker in the November 3, 2023 NNP Symposium, and asked if any other club member will do a presentation at any conference or organization to let the club know so we can celebrate it.
  3. John announced that The Graysheet (CDN Publishing) acquired Whitman Publishing on November 1.
  4. John reported the excitement about the joint Numismatic and Philatelic cross marketing using the November magazine covers (of ANA and APS) to promote each other’s organizations.
  5. John called for a club vote to approve an advance of $875 as a deposit to a restaurant for a joint CCC and NYNC banquet at the 2024 WFoM convention. The deposit was approved by the board but requires a vote at a full club meeting. The $875 deposit will be returned to the club from the banquet ticket sales. The club approved the deposit.
  6. John reminded club members that 2024 dues are soon due and reminders will be mailed with the December Chatter.

Featured Program

2023 Annual Chicago Coin Club auction. 71 lots of coins, medals, books, and assorted numismatic items. Auctioneer Jeff Rosinia entertained the club with his coin themed jokes in between auction lots, as Melissa Gumm gave her track shoes a work out running auction lots to the block and the winners, while treasurer Elliott Kreiter proficiently tracked each hammered winning bid all with the precision of a well-oiled machine. Also, John Riley diligently tracked the winning bid amount and bidder’s name. After the 62 items listed in the November Chatter had been called, 9 additional club-benefit lots of material donated by Richard Lipman were called, raising an additional $170.

Show and Tell

There was no Show and Tell due to the annual auction.

Announcements

John Riley adjourned the meeting at 8:48pm CST

Respectfully Submitted,
Scott A. McGowan, Secretary

Minutes of the Chicago Coin Club Board

November 15, 2023

The meeting was called to order by club President John Riley at 6:01PM.

Board members present for the meeting were John Riley, Melissa Gumm, Deven Kane, Scott McGowan, Elliott Krieter, Paul Hybert, Carl Wolf, Bill Burd, Mark Wieclaw, Steve Zitowsky, Rich Lipman, and Ray Dagenais. Absent was Jeff Rosinia. One guest was present, Dale Lukanich the 2024 ANA World’s Fair of Money® (WFoM) host club chairperson.

WFOM: Dale Lukanich presented the board with an update of the 2024 WFoM planning committee. Key discussion surrounded the joint CCC and NYNC banquet and whether to book the 50-person or 90-person room. Discussion among the board settled on booking the 50-person room and hold attendance to first-come first-serve ticket sales based on a split of tickets between the two clubs. Closer to the event date it could be evaluated to open up unsold tickets from either club to general memberships.

Treasurer’s Report: Elliott Krieter presented the October period treasurer’s report that was delayed from the November general club meeting. Elliott will present this report in December with the November report.

CCC Auction: The board reviewed the recent club auction results and it was noted that after 23 years Bill Burd will retire from managing the auction, which includes item solicitations, storage, cataloging, and layout for preview the night of the auction. Bill did offer for Chicago Coin Company to house auction items that come in during the year to provide a secure location. Rich Lipman and Deven Kane volunteered to take over the auction coordination for 2024. John Riley recommended that we try to integrate more coins, paper money, medals, and tokens as part of the lots rather than mostly CCC related items, but there is concern that items may not garner bids if consignments set starting bids. The committee will explore the option along with the possibility of no minimum bid guideline. It was noted that the large auction of a club in central Illinois serves the date and mintmark collectors.

CCC Banquet: Brief discussion of the readiness for the upcoming CCC holiday banquet. The board thanked Bill Burd of Chicago Coin Company for supplying the appetizers. Bill will bring a projection screen and podium for the presentation. Deven Kane indicated the Cabeen award results will be provided to Carl for medals. The Hall of Fame announcement will have a write up to be presented. Bill indicated a paper program would be created for attendees. As of November 15, ticket sales were at 21 with more arriving daily at the club P.O. Box. Discussion of a membership call-tree to generate ticket sales decided not to do the call-tree. Scott to reach out for Young Numismatists to attend as their banquet cost is covered by the generous donation from Sharon and Kevin Blocker.

Projects Survey: Secretary Scott McGowan showed a graph on screen of the membership survey results for ideas on which to spend a portion of club funds. Highest results indicated scholarships for YN and adults to attend Summer Seminar. Scott will send a full survey results report including the miscellaneous comments to the Projects Committee. Regarding the investment of club funds into an interest-bearing instrument, treasurer Elliott Krieter recommended we could immediately invest $5,000.00. The committee will review for the recommended path forward.

CCC-NYNC Symposium: The board discussed the symposium, a joint event with the NYNC, and recommended for John Riley to contact NYNC Mary Lannin with the name and program recommendation that was agreed upon, after getting final agreement by the individual.

Numismatic Literature from Estates: Bill Burd reported that all numismatic literature provided to the CCC from the estates of Phil Carrigan and Saul Needleman has been sold.

Coins for A’s: The board discussed the Coins for A’s program which was approved by the board at the February 2023 board meeting. Secretary Scott McGowan provided the board with a brief future Chatter article on the program, and a form for submitting the requirements. Scott indicated that the guidelines for the CCC program basically mirrors the same program at the ANA. General discussion questioned if the program should include lesser school grades, non-CCC members, and individuals over the age of 18 given that the intent is to drive interest in numismatics. After considerable discussion it was recommended that we publish the program as originally approved in February, then look at expanding it in the future.

Chatter Update: Chatter Editor Paul Hybert reported that US Postage will increase in 2024 from $0.66 to $0.68 for the first ounce of First-class postage. Additional-ounce cost remains the same, however it has increased mid-year in the past. Chatter production schedule is to take the printmaster to the printer two days before the last Wednesday of each month, with the Chatter usually mailed on the last Wednesday of each month (or the following day). Paul asked the board to indicate if there should be any changes based on this update. The board indicated no changes.

CCC to Schmidt Office: Scott McGowan reminded the board that in December 2022 CCC member Shanna Schmidt offered to host CCC events at the new Shanna Schmidt Numismatics offices on Michigan Avenue, Chicago. CCC board members were to arrange a visit in 2023 after the offices opened. This being an open board item was brought up, and was decided for Scott to reach out to Shanna and staff for potential dates for a visit.

ANA/APS: John Riley reminded the board of the joint promotion of Numismatics and Philately on the covers of both organization’s November periodicals.

Featured Speakers: First Vice President Melissa Gumm called on the board for suggestions for 2024 featured speakers. As of November 15, 2023, we have speakers for January, February, March and October. We will need two speakers for the months of April and August, given the extra CCC meeting at coin conventions. All suggestions are welcome.

John Riley indicated the next board meeting, in February 2024, will be in person at Connie’s Pizza.

2024 Board meetings will be on: February 21, May 15, August 21, November 20, 2024.

President John Riley adjourned the board meeting at 7:21pm CST.

Respectfully Submitted,
Scott A. McGowan, Secretary
