The 1187th meeting of the Chicago Coin Club was the Annual Banquet and held Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at the Grand Lux Café, 111 E. Ontario, Downtown Chicago. President Richard Lipman convened the meeting at 7 PM with attendance of 29 members and 10 guests: Ricardo and Christine Lopez, Stanley Campbell, Gene Mitchell, Kathy Rosinia, Chris Lukanich, Janet Leonard, Alan Halvorsen, Dominic Adducci, and Terry Young.
President Lipman thanked the Banquet Committee: Mark Wieclaw (Chairman), Bill Burd, and Sharon Blocker. He also acknowledged the banquet sponsors who made donations to offset extra costs. They were: Kevin & Sharon Blocker, Dale Lukanich, Mark Wieclaw, Steve Zitowsky, Loren Miller, Rich Lipman, and Marc Ricard.
It was announced that Past President Richard Hartzog (1979-82) passed away November 10. A moment of silence was held in memory of Richard and Past President Charles Ricard (1987-88) who passed away August 14. Charles Ricard’s son Marc thanked the members for honoring his father and being a part of his collecting family. Richard Hartzog’s close friend Stanley Campbell honored Rich’s memory and spoke briefly of how he passed away quickly. Brett Irick announced that member Ray Lockwood’s 99-year-old mother recently passed away and asked members to reach out with condolences.
Treasurer Steve Zitowsky read a letter from the Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. They cited the club’s dedication to the study of numismatics and enclosed a $5,000.00 check. The secretary read the thank you letter acknowledging receipt of the funds and related the club motto Docendo Discimus, Latin for “We Learn by Teaching.”
Second V.P. John Riley presented engraved club medals to the 2017 Cabeen Award recipients. They were: Honorable Mention Robert D. Leonard, Lyle Daly, Robert Feiler, and Richard Lipman; second place silver: Deven Kane (not present); and first place gold: Mark Wieclaw.
First V.P. Marc Stackler introduced the featured speaker Stanley Campbell who delivered a PowerPoint presentation Collecting Cuba: A Travelogue for Numismatists. Following a question and answer period, Stanley was presented with an ANA Educational Certificate and an engraved club medal.
Guest Ricardo Lopez, St. Petersburg, FL was introduced. Ricardo found meeting details on the club’s Facebook page and is a board member of the Cuban Numismatic Association. Ricardo spoke briefly on his travels to Cuba and told of how to avoid difficulties bringing back collectible coins, currency, books, etc.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:02 PM.

Richard Hartzog, member #883, joined the Chicago Coin Club in May 1974 and served as President 1979-82. He collected 19th century Illinois exonumia, was a past-president of the Chicago Coin Club (1979-82), and served on the board of governors for the Central States Numismatic Society, Civil War Token Society, Token and Medal Society, and the Illinois Numismatic Association. He was life member #1046 of the American Numismatic Association.
Richard was born November 4, 1947 in Chicago. He graduated in 1971 from the University of Wisconsin at Platteville and was employed 1971-74 as a management engineer at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford, Illinois.
He began dealing coins prior to 1974 when he became a full time dealer. In 1977 he started specializing in dealing tokens and medals and under World Exonumia. Richard conducted 11 auction sales 1977 to 2006. He authored the 1982 and 1986 editions of Rich Hartzog’s Price Guide for Medals of the United States Mint, The First Century, 1792-1892. Under the name World Exonumia Press he published American and Canadian Countermarked Coins and other books on countermarks written by Gregory Brunk; Trade Tokens of Illinois in two editions, written by Ore Vacketta; and Oregon Trade Tokens by Jim Hemphill.
Richard is survived by his brother Jeffrey Hartzog; a sister Nancy White, Colorado; daughter Jennifer Hartzog, South Beloit, WI; and nephew Tyler White, Kansas City. He is preceded by his parents, a sister Terri Hartzog, and partner June Shigley. Interment will be at the Montrose Cemetery in Chicago.

— Uncoined Money – A Survey of the Ethnographic Money of South East Asia
Located along the sea trade routes between India and China, coins were not unknown in South East Asia. Native coinage may have started as early as the first millennium of the common era. Coinage disappeared in the tumult caused by the arrival of new peoples in the region. When money returned approximately 500 years later, it was in the form of exotic silver ingots with colorful names such as tiger tongue, leech, boat, bullet, and bracelet money. This continued until the introduction of regular coinage in the 19th century. Further south in Malaya, tin money made its appearance in the form of hat money and various animal shapes while also being coined into the small tin pitis of the local Sultanates and the large tin bastardos, soldos, and dinheiros of the Portuguese. While the unusually shaped money of South East Asia is popular with many collectors, the coins and ethnographic money of the region deserve more academic attention – a process made tougher by its unfortunate history after the Second World War. |
