Volume 63 No. 2 February 2017

2017 Dues Reminder

The 2017 dues notice was sent with the October Chatter, and most members now are paid for 2017. A reminder is sent with this issue to those who have not yet paid for 2017 — if you receive a printed Chatter, you have not paid for 2017 if there is a red mark on the top left corner of the mailing label; if you receive an emailed link to the online Chatter, you will receive a separate emailed reminder. Please send the $20 dues for 2017 to the club’s mailbox listed in the Chatter Matter section of this issue.

Editor’s Notes

It seems that a few club members will miss our downtown meeting in March in order to attend the ANA’s National Money Show in Orlando — a spring break from getting old? I will let you know after I return. Who will write about the March featured program for the April Chatter?

The ANA’s summer convention will be in Denver this August. Numismatics and other things are legal in Colorado, and it might be no more than a long day drive for our members who live in the far, far, far western suburbs. If you live downtown, it is 19 hours overnight by Amtrak from Union Station — arrive early in the morning, and walk to the convention center — this will be my third time taking the train to a Denver ANA. A few of our members live in Colorado — one has been named the local host chair, so hope to see him at the CSNS convention rounding up some volunteers.

Minutes of the 1177th Meeting

The Chicago Coin Club Annual Award Banquet was held January 11, 2017 at Marcello’s Restaurant, 645 W. North Ave., Chicago. The 1177th meeting was called to order by President Richard Lipman at 6:00 PM with 20 members and 5 guests: Debbie Green (Lipman), Marcia Zitowsky, Chris Lukanich, Kathy Rosinia, and Janet Leonard.

A motion was passed to adopt an abbreviated agenda for the meeting.

Following an invocation by Richard Hamilton, warm rounds of applause were given to Sharon and Kevin Blocker, and Mark Wieclaw, sponsors of the pre-dinner appetizers, plus Steve Zitowsky for arranging the banquet.

Following dinner, the following presentations were made:

  1. Engraved Life Membership card to Dale Carlson.
  2. Marc Stackler announced the recipients of the 2016 Cabeen Exhibit Awards, and presented each with an engraved medal from the newly arrived stock of hexagonal nickel medals: Honorable Mention to: Robert Leonard, Deven Kane, Robert Feiler (not present), and Dale Lukanich. Richard Lipman received the Second Place Silver Award, and Mark Wieclaw received the First Place Gold Award.
  3. 2016 engraved Speaker Medals were also presented: Marc Stackler, Feb 10, 2016; Dale Lukanich, Mar 9, 2016; Deven Kane, Apr 13, 2016; Dale Lukanich, Aug 10, 2016; Jeffrey Rosinia, Sep 14, 2016; and John Riley, Nov 9, 2016.

The program for the evening was given by members who rose and briefly spoke of their non-numismatic collecting: Richard Hamilton playing cards; Deven Kane Roman jewelry; Carl Wolf fountain pens; Jeff Rosinia promotional antique banks of miniature oil cans and a small, functioning, hand-operated Singer Sewing machine carried by their traveling salesmen; Mark Wieclaw wood turned vases by Dave Turner, Wisconsin; and Richard Lipman material used to cover the wings on the Wright Brothers famous flight. The meeting was adjourned at 8:05 PM.

Respectfully Submitted,
Carl F. Wolf, Secretary

Featured Program:Deven KaneCoinage of the Western Kshatrapas of Gujarat
From 35-415 CE large parts of Western and Central India were ruled by Indo-Scythian (Saka) rulers. They adopted the title Kshatrapa (derived from the Old Persian title viceroy or governor) and are today known as the Western Kshatrapas to distinguish them from the “Northern Satraps” who ruled around East Punjab and the area of Mathura. The Western Kshatrapas issued an extensive coinage in silver, copper, and lead. For much of their almost four centuries of rule they were the only issuers of silver coinage in India. Their coins are also the first dated coins in Indian history and the Saka Era is still used today as India’s official civil calendar. Coinage derived from Kshatrapa silver coinage continued for 250 years after the fall of the Kshatrapas.
