2015 CCC Dues are Due

Check the outside of your printed Chatter. A slip of yellow paper stapled outside the cover indicates that, according to our records, you have not paid your dues for 2015. Please mail them to the address on that slip, or bring them to our next meeting.

Minutes of the 1151st Meeting

Session I of 1150th meeting of the Chicago Coin Club was held November 12, 2014 in the Chicago Bar Association Building, 321 S. Plymouth Court, Downtown Chicago. President Elliott Krieter called the meeting to order at 6:45 PM with an attendance of 28 members and 4 guests: Loren R. Miller III, Larry Dora, Robert Lenet, and Kevin O’Brien.

A motion was passed to accept the October Minutes as published in the Chatter. The Minutes of the October 15 Board Meeting were approved after adding the correction “an upgraded menu at no additional cost received the support of the Board.” Treasurer Steve Zitowsky gave a detailed report for the month of October revenue of $850.00, expenses of $325.60, net income of $524.40, total assets of $24,803.36 held in Life Membership $2,110.00 and member equity $22,803.36. A motion was passed to accept the report.

The applications of membership for Dr. Leon Saryan, Jeffrey Paunicka, and E.J (Ed) Kedzie received a second reading and a motion was passed to accept them into the Club. The applications of Loren R. Miller III and Larry Dora received first reading. It was announced that Tom DeLorey is choosing not to renew his membership for 2015.

Chairman of the Nominations Committee Jeffrey Rosinia announced the following slate for 2015-16 Board which shall be voted on at the December 10 meeting. President: Elliott Krieter; First Vice President: Richard Lipman; Second Vice President: Marc Stackler; Director: Steve Ambos, Eugene Freeman, Dale Lukanich, and Mark Wieclaw; appointed positions include Immediate Past President: Jeffrey Rosinia; Secretary: Carl Wolf; Treasurer: Steve Zitowsky; and Editor: Paul Hybert.

Announcements:

• Mark Wieclaw announced the Club’s Annual Banquet on December 10th will be at The Rosewood Restaurant, 9421 W. Higgins Road, Rosemont, IL 60018. Reservations required at $45.00 per person.
• Jeff Rosinia, Host Chairman of the 2015 ANA Convention, announced a meeting of the Convention Committee, Wednesday, Nov 19 in the offices of Harlan J. Berk, Ltd.

The remainder of the evening was dedicated to an auction of 75+ items of numismatic material with Jeff Rosinia serving as the auctioneer.

The meeting was recessed at 8:36 PM and will be reconvened 1 PM, Saturday November 22 at the PCDA National Coin and Currency Show, Rosemont, IL.

Session II of the 1151st meeting of the Chicago Coin Club was held November 22, 2014 at the PCDA National Coin and Currency Convention. President Elliott Krieter called the meeting to order at 1:05 PM with an attendance of 20 members and six guests. Elliott reminded attendees about the December 10 Club banquet at the Rosewood in Rosemont, IL. Banquet tickets are $45.

There was a first reading by Jeff Rosinia of the application for new member Jeffrey Dohm.

There was also a reminder about the 2015 ANA, 11-15 August, in Rosemont at the Donald Stephens Center. Members are encouraged to fill out volunteer applications. Members who are interested in making a “money talks” presentation should contact Mark Wieclaw.

Rich Lipman introduced the featured speaker, Doug Davis, founder of the Numismatic Crimes Information Center, www.NumismaticCrimes.org, whose topic was crime and security for dealers and collectors alike. Following a question-and-answer period, Doug was presented with an ANA Educational Certificate and an engraved Club speaker’s medal.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:05 PM.

Minutes of the 2015 Chicago ANA Convention Committee

November 19, 2014

Attendees: Rosinia, Zitowsky, Burd, Gumm, Wieclaw, Lipman, Berk, Feiler, Freeman, and Stackler.

Jeff Rosinia welcomed everyone as the 2015 Host Chairman. The committee thanked Harlan Berk for providing the meeting location and food for our meetings, as well as his long-time support of the Chicago Coin Club. Harlan has been made honorary host chairman for 2015.

Meetings will be every third Wednesday of the month starting January 2015, until July 2015, and with the exception of January and April they will be held at the offices of Harlan J. Berk. For January, Jeff will contact Rhonda (ANA) to arrange a meeting place in Rosemont. In April, the committee plans to meet at the Central States convention instead of downtown.

The committee budget (from the ANA) is the same as last year: $6000.

The World’s Fair of Money (ANA) convention will be held at the Donald Stephens Center, located at River Rd. and Bryn Mawr Ave., in Rosemont, IL, from 11-15 August 2015. The convention will be in Hall F (to the right of the entrance), not Hall A as with the two past conventions.

Scouts. Eugene Freeman mentioned that ending the Saturday scout meeting at 10:30am worked well, so that the scouts could get out on the floor before many dealers packed up to leave. He noted that over 150 boys have earned collecting patches in 2011-2013-2014. This past September 24, the Northwest Suburban Council of the BSA approved the group merit badge clinic, and approved the “Scouting at the ANA” program, for the 2015 WFOM. Rod Gillis (ANA) will complete a first draft of the scout flyers by December. Also to be decided is a series of steps for scouts, who have not attended in prior years, to earn the complete coin collecting patch at the 2015 convention. A series of efforts to promote the convention will be taken, including publishing an article/notice in Boy’s Life, Coin World, and the Central States bulletin. Eugene will also speak with Rod Gillis about a scouting write-up for the ANA website.

Ambassadors. Carl Wolf reported (via email) that volunteer forms are arriving from past as well as new volunteers. He is looking to have floor captains from the past year, as well as new ones. Marc reported that having an “Ask Me” (information) seated at the information desk worked far better than having volunteers walk the floor. The prominent location — just inside the show entrance — made for many, many questions/interactions each day. The ANA staff at the info table thanked the Chicago Coin Club for their help, and asked if we could do it again in 2015. Marc will work with Carl on a small improvement to the sign, which was otherwise easily seen by dealers and collectors alike.

Money Talks. Mark Wieclaw mentioned that having a second sandwich board, with a list of the dates and times of money talks, was helpful for 2014 convention goers. Attendance averaged about 10-20 per session, which is about as expected. Mark also mentioned that this year he would like to get the mobile number for each speaker. This past convention, one speaker confused time zones and showed up late. Mark is also soliciting help for speaker introductions. The ANA is expecting to have speaker applications ready by January 2015. Proposals are being reviewed for the 2015 speaker medal … which may sport some color! (Expenditure for the medal will require CCC Board approval.)

Collector Exhibits. Melissa Gumm reported that in the past it has been difficult to connect with exhibitors. The ANA had to extend the application period in 2013. Some ideas are to contact local clubs, not only to promote the show, but also to get more enthusiasm for exhibiting. The committee discussed the possibility of the CCC creating a non-competitive exhibit of our club material.

Open Discussion / Other. At the 2014 show the ANA conducted an informal survey and received about 140 responses. In general, people liked the show. Over one-third of respondents were not ANA members. In order of most-to-least, respondents said they heard of the show via the internet, ANA website, friends, dealers, and (almost nobody) local media. Almost 80 percent bought something at the show, but two-thirds did not attend any meeting, presentation, or event. A number of people said they would like for the US Postal Service to have a pick-up location at the convention. (The USPS has a station within a few blocks, but declined to be at the convention.) Other shortcomings per the respondents: missed having the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, disliked the Kennedy Gold $50 promotion, requested more/any lobby seating, and were disappointed that so many dealers pack up early on Saturday. The discussion moved to ideas to promote the show, which included speaking to local clubs and sending information to local news for their “weekend things to do.” In both cases it was agreed that it needs to start in advance, with follow up / repeat communications especially for the local clubs.
