A motion was passed to approve the Treasurer’s report by Steve Zitowsky on the October 31st Club finances:

Under old business, Robert Feiler, Chairman of the 85th Anniversary Committee, reported on an upcoming committee meeting on November 19th at Connie’s Pizza. Carl Wolf reported that the magnifier-flashlights with the Club’s imprint had arrived. A motion was passed to sell them for $8.00 each. Under new business, President Wieclaw read correspondence from the ANA. Carl Wolf reported that the Chicago Area Council of the Boy Scouts requested the Club’s participation in a Merit Badge Clinic. A motion was made that he and Jeff Rosinia act as Club liaisons with the Scouts, respond positively to their request and report back on clinic dates and details. After President Wieclaw inquired about Club’s souvenir sheet for the February 26-29 Chicago Paper Money Expo, Carl Wolf reported that he had several CD’s with Chicago Bank Note images that would be passed to Jeff Rosinia.
Treasurer Zitowsky read the names of members with outstanding 2003 dues and a motion was passed to drop them from the membership rolls. They were: Jeffrey Amelse, Scott Douglas*, Dennis Fuller, Robert Hoge, Mark Holmer, Dale Noble, Steve Norton, Fidencio Paredez, Doug Scrimager, J. Vincent Swift, William Swoger, David Tsujimoto, Donald and Shirley Valenziano, and Fred White.
The program for the evening was the annual auction that took in $928.00 for the Club’s treasury. The largest share came from books donated by member Donn Pearlman.

Program: | Dr. Susan Solway, Professor of Art History, DePaul University on Roman Coins Beyond Rome: Numismatic Passages into Medieval Art and Material Culture | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Dr. Solway's slide illustrated talk will cover the survival of Roman Coins in the Middle Ages and their numismatic "afterlife" in medieval art and material culture. Small, portable, virtually impervious to decay, mass-produced and widely distributed over the Roman Empire, whose territory became the realm of the medieval world, Roman coins served simultaneously as vehicles for the persistence of the classical tradition and as raw material for physical and functional transformation into artifacts of medieval culture. Dr. Solway will cover such topics including coin ornaments and jewelry, traditionally considered outside the realm of medieval art history and numismatics; the "reuse" via fashioning and refashioning of coins into Christian sacred objects; numismatic sources of medieval iconography; reverence of ancient coins and their medieval imitations as Christian relics, talismans and/or amulets; and pictorial translations of imperial profile portraits as political and propagandistic stamps of authority. Everyone who attends Dr. Solway's talk will come away with a new appreciation of the intersections between numismatics and art history! |
